S03E29 – Under The Covers

S3E29 – Under The Covers by Tune Me What? on Mixcloud

If you’re old enough, you’ll remembers the Springbok Hit Parade albums, filled with cover version of international hits performed by unnamed local session musicians. You will have heard stories of how record producers would play singles down the phone from New York or London so a local artist could get their version out before the international version was released. British did it to the Americans, occasionally the Americans did it to the Brits, and we in South Africa did it to both of them. For those of us who were in bands, we recall the frustration of having to choose between playing original music and starving or going “commercial” and playing “cover versions”.

These days, now that artists have their own voices, the status of the cover song has changed. Artists choose to record a cover as an artistic statement of their – making it their own – or as a tribute, or just for fun! So today’s show features some of the more interesting cover versions of international hits, remade in a new image by SA artists!

We feature:

  • The Bats
  • Goldfish
  • Wonderboom
  • Steve kekana
  • Dan Patlansky
  • The Flames
  • Omega Limited
  • Spoek Mathambo
  • Claire Johnston
  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo
  • Lucky Dube
  • Township Soul Inc

S03E22 – The World Missed

tmw-s03e22-episode

Hits The World Missed by Tune Me What? on Mixcloud

It’s an obvious point that South African artists have produced unique sounds and field-leading music across most genres, but even today few SA musicians manage to trouble the charts overseas. Needless to say, there are a great many tunes which really should be up there with the classics of the pop cannon. They should have been global smash hits!

In this episode we barely scratch the surface with our pick of a dozen tracks the world missed out on… or is missing out on!

In this show, we knock out:

  • The Anti Retro Vinyls
  • Clout
  • The Dealians
  • Ella Mental
  • éVoid
  • The Helecopters
  • Hotline & Steve Kekana
  • Joy
  • Nakhane Toure
