As promised, here is a photo of co-host Leon Lazarus reviewing some copy for the Hallucinogenic Wasteland Magazine in 1988, during his ‘Boy-Lee’ (AKA ‘Calmer CarmeLeon’) period. It lasted about 3 hours, and he enjoyed only “cups of tea” for the duration.

Are you ‘Hank Marvin’ for some 60s tunes?

  • The Shadows (A South African rarity)

This week’s Gigs, Gossip & Grooves is given over to an interview with up-and-coming SA band, Red Huxley, but there are a few gigs we think you should know about anyway…

  • Seether will be playing on Tuesday, August 27 at the Concrete Street Amphitheater in the city of Corpus Christie in Texas.
  • For South Africans in the UK, here is one you wont want to miss. Celebrated South African song writer, singer and fret man Nibs van der Spuy and blues guitarist Dan Patlansky will share the stage at the Half Moon Putney on Sunday 15 September and the Green Note Camden on Tuesday 17 September. That should be a gig to remember.
  • To coincide with the launch of his first ‘live’ album – “Live in KwaZulu”, accoustic guitarist Guy Buttery will be touring internationally. Two shows are scheduled for London this month at The Half Moon in Putney on Tuesday the 27th, and Green Note in Camden on Wednesday the 28th. Tickets are £10. The limited edition CD – normally only available online – will be on sale, so it’s a chance to grab a copy. We’ll of course keep you posted about future shows.
  • On the 26th of August, award-winning South African pianist Anne Marshall and flautist Abigail Burrows will be playing a lunchtime chamber music recital at the famous St Martin’s in the Field off Trafalgar Square in London, starting at 1pm.
  • South African musicians are really making their mark on the classical music scene. Another award-winning South African – baritone Njabulo Madlala – will be performing songs by Benjamin Britten and Franz Shubert, as well as music from “his homeland” says the programme – at St Lawrence Jewry in London on August 29.

And here’s the damning photographic evidence we promised you. No idea what possessed us to publish this? Well, listen to this week’s episode!
