S04E16 – Getting Over Sugarman

sugermangraphic

Did the Oscar-winning documentary “Searching For Sugarman” make things up and distort facts to the point where international audiences got a false impressing of the South African music scene? With their special guest, music sociologist Michael Drewett, Brett & Leon reveal the scandalous truth about Malik Bendjelloul’s ‘fake-umentary’.

In this episode we feature:

S04E10 – Common Censorship Show

tmw-s04e10-graphic

The recent row over the disgraceful culture of censorship gripping the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) got Leon and Brett thinking about how so very little has changed at the corporation since the dark days of apartheid. It seems the power of a state-controlled media conglomerate has corrupted the present new as much as the old. But as always, South Africans aren’t ready to take this kak lying down and the fight has been taken to the very car park of the institution. Here are some tunes banned in the the past to keep you toyi-toying in the present…. right up to Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s door.

This episode features:

  • Johannes Kerkorel en die Gereformeerde Blues Band
  • Roger Lucey
  • Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse
  • Mzwake Mbule

S04E08 – The 90% Show

s04e08-graphicpic

In this episode, Leon and Brett talk about what constitutes a strong enough “South African identity” for a musician or band to be considered “local” for the purposes of the SABC’s new – and welcome – 90% quota on local music. Some say it is unrealistic, but let’s be honest, American and Britain already play high percentages of home-grown music and have the strongest music industries in the world. Still, there is come controversy about the wisdom of the move and of course what constitutes “local music” so we’d love to hear your views, but first, enjoy the show featuring some of the best South African music around.

In this episode we feature:
